SOL Information for Parents & Students

Students are assessed each year in grades three through eight and at the end of the course in specific subjects.

The Standards of Learning for Virginia Public Schools describe the commonwealth's expectations for student learning and achievement in grades K-12 in English, mathematics, science, history/social science, technology, the fine arts, foreign language, health and physical education, and driver education.

These standards represent a broad consensus of what parents, classroom teachers, school administrators, academics, and business and community leaders believe schools should teach and students should learn.

In the four core areas of English, mathematics, science, and history/social science, a curriculum framework also is provided that details the specific knowledge and skills students must possess to meet the standards for these subjects.

Standards of Learning currently in effect are listed below by subject area with pulldowns by grade level for each subject. Links also are provided for the curriculum frameworks mentioned above.

Test Taking Tips for Students

Eat a healthy breakfast each morning.
Get enough sleep each night.
Make sure you arrive at school on time.
Think positive thoughts like the Little Engine: "I think I can. I think I can!"
Relax and do your best. Don't let the "jitter bugs" worry you.
Listen carefully to the directions and ask questions before the test begins if you don't understand.
If you don't know the answer make a good guess.
Wear comfortable clothes the day of the test.
Reread directions.
Read each question carefully before answering.
Work on the easiest problems first and go back to the more difficult ones.
Go back to skipped ones.
Double check your answers by rereading the questions.
Stick with your first answer (usually your first instinct is right, so don't change an answer unless you are sure your first choice is wrong.)
Use the online tools carefully and only when needed to help find an answer.
